We recently mentioned the rollout of Pelotero, the latest piece of Player Development infrastructure here at Top Tier Las Vegas, and we’ve begun onboarding a small demo group of players to get a feel for how we’re going to navigate and use this technology as a Player Development team.
On Tuesday, we captured some initial swings to populate the mechanics side of things for the players in the demo group. Here’s a look at what we see—and players and families will be able to see—once swings are captured and uploaded to the platform.

Through the video capture of the swings, Pelotero’s system analyzes the swing using its Player Intelligence system and produces a “Mechanics” score.
Antonio Whitney is the example above, and here’s his present Swing Mechanics score:

Beyond the face value metrics—which includes multiple factors within the swing such as Plane, Direction, Depth & Length, and Adjustability, the software provides us with detailed feedback on all phases of the swing (Gather, Load/Launch, and Contact), which looks like this:

In the columns (left to right), we have a feedback label (Great, Okay, Poor, etc.), questions that define the components within the phases of the swing, assessments on the player’s latest data capture for each component of the phases, and a box that reads “View Demo.”
When coaches, players, or parents click the “View Demo” box, we’re shown a proper and an incorrect visual of that component. Currently, the side-by-side GIF shows a stock example of the incorrect execution and a major league example of the correct execution. In the near future, Pelotero will roll out the ability to use the left side of the side-by-side as the actual player we’re assessing, providing even more accurate real-time feedback.

The Swing Mechanic score is one-third of what the platform measures, along with “Power,” built from Diamond Kinetics bat sensor data, and “Performance,” built from player-inputted data on in-game performance. Those three phases help create a complete picture of each player’s offensive profile.
More importantly, it helps us create a plan for every player in the program that they and we can easily access and implement.

These drills can (and should) be done daily by the player on their own, and they allow us to individualize team hitting sessions. Whereas previously we put together a generalized plan for a cage session, we can now have a plan for each player who steps into the cage during their turn in the rotation.
Each drill in the player’s workout prescription includes a link to an instructional video with directions and objectives, guiding the player through the various parts of the workout, as if we were there with them at home.
No guessing. No excuses.

Once players’ profiles become more complete, with the addition of bat sensor data (for the Power score) and in-game feedback from the player (for the Performance score), that player’s overall score, and more importantly, their individual workout prescription, will evolve accordingly.
In the initial demo group, my big question was, “How do I explain this to hitters and parents?” Using Tony as an example, he’s an advanced in-game hitter but came back with a Swing Mechanics score of 77.
His score was most negatively impacted by his rear elbow staying stacked under his hands. The Player Intelligence system showed that his rear elbow started down in a good position at launch, but was pulled forward as the swing progressed to contact.
So I got with Mike Olt—a former major leaguer—this morning, and we watched it together. His feedback was that the elbow lost a little connection between the load phase and the launch/phase. Little being the emphasis. It’s not far off for Whitney.
The bigger-picture takeaway is this: don’t get lost in the numbers as a player or parent. Understand that this data is one small piece of the puzzle for us as coaches. What this tells us is that we’re one tiny correction from that score being on the elite end of the spectrum (it’s a 1-100 scale, based on 20,000 major league data captures, and more than 500,000 internal captures).
Furthermore, we have an actionable plan to address that adjustment readily available for the player and us within minutes. In a program that now has more than 50 hitters, that’s a game-changer.
Here’s another example:

Brady Kotake’s swing captures last night provided a Swing Mechanic score of 61. We all know Brady is an advanced in-game hitter, and everything about his swing points to that, from the foundational.
Mike and I watched his swing together today as well, and he said it’s easy to see he’s an advanced in-game hitter, with a very good setup and load, which contributes to his high marks in the Plane and Adjustability components of the score.
The direction takes a hit, simply because at 13, Brady needs to get stronger. Mike’s assessment was that his direction begins perfectly, but the strength deficit prevents it from finishing that way.
Have you heard the verbal cue, “just get through the baseball,” before? The fact is, some guys can (to start) but can’t (through finish) with a strength deficit.
That’s a great example of not getting lost in the number, but rather understanding every little component of the swing, what’s done well presently, and how we get what’s not presently efficient, up to the same level, to make it a complete version eventually.
Through the data we have captured, we have a plan, custom to Brady’s needs:

One thing I want to point out here (which came to me as I was putting this together), is that workouts can be created for players at home based on what they have to work with on any given day.
If you’re working solo, the plan will be all tee work. If you have someone with you to flip or throw BP, the plan will include that, too.
Ultimately, there are two chief benefits to the Pelotero system for us.
From a Player Development side, it provides us with a centralized place to assess and prescribe our hitters, in a manner of efficiency not otherwise possible, which helps us improve our Hitting Department now, and sets us up to handle scale over the long term.
From a player and parent standpoint, it gives them more access to the puzzle. More insight, more knowledge, and control of their journey, and helps bridge the communication gap, something we’ve discussed, is a priority for us (that began with the 20-80 grades last month).
In totality, this gives everyone a powerful resource and a check-and-balance system, where players can have everything they need to steer their journey at their fingertips, and an accountability system for us, allowing us to hold them accountable.

- More information on the Pelotero rollout will be coming soon, including a Google Meet for families to meet Chris Colabello and the rest of the Pelotero staff, where they’ll run down the platform’s ins and outs, and give families the opportunity to have questions answered. We’ll try to get that on the books within the next week.
- We didn’t have a lot of guys in action on Tuesday, but here’s the highlights from those who were:
- Trey Webb (’29) went 4-5 with a double, triple, 3 RBI, and five runs scored in game one of Laughlin’s doubleheader against Indian Springs on Tuesday. Webb went 2-3 with three runs scored in the back half of that doubleheader.
- Jackson Pahang (’29) was 2-3 with a double in Spanish Springs’ 7-3 loss to McQueen.
- Luke Fleeman (’28) went 1-2 in Centennial JV’s 15-0 win over Basic.
